Why Urban Bee Project Australia.

I have always loved creation — the earth, nature and animals. I also always wanted to find some way to help look after it. Now, more than ever, we all need to find a small way to make things a little better.

I started beekeeping in 2013, and through failure and success, I grew in my love and passion for the caring of these beautiful creatures. It was hard work, but it was worth every bit of effort.

Urban Bee Project Australia was born

in my head at least.

Over time, I became more aware of many of the misconceptions that many in my community had about bees. I was devastated to hear of beehives sprayed with poison because of unjustified fear. On top of that, the world had started to be rocked by the revelations some honey from large honey producers, is being diluted and tampered with and brought in from offshore sources while claiming to be pure and local. I thought to myself, “Surely I can show people how awesome bees are and help people know where their honey comes from.”

Urban Bee Project Australia was born…. in my head at least.

Over the next few years, my wife and I spent our free time learning more about our bees and growing our colonies. Our focus was managing our bees in such a way to ensure their health and well being was the priority, not the mass production of honey.

As we slowly grew our number of hives we were finally able to set up the business formally in November of 2018. But we are more than just beekeepers. We have much bigger dreams than that.

Our ambitious goals for our girls is to develop programs and strategies to:

  • Increase the bee population and health in the urban environment.

  • Educate and share our knowledge and skills with our community.

  • Care and look after our hard working ladies.

  • Bring a little nature back into the City.

We want to start a movement. We want to get people talking, thinking and acting. To appreciate that small steps can make a massive difference to our environment and that humans and nature are meant to be together, not separate.

So what about the future?

We’re small for now, but all new colonies do start out small. Through hard work and a little help from our friends, we’ll grow.

Our plans are simple.

  • Expand the network of Urban Bee Hives in Melbourne.

  • Begin the development and delivery of educational material for our community.

  • Share the love (by that we mean honey).

  • Spread the word.
